The art of the stained glass window in the Holy Chapel
This guided tour takes you to one of the most beautiful relics of Gothic art, recognized as a master in architecture and stained glass.
Situated on the Île de la Cité, a few steps from the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Sainte Chapelle or Holy Chapel is a real jewel in the heart of Paris.
It was the King Louis IV, known as Saint Louis, who ordered its construction between 1242 and 1248 with the purpose of keeping the relics of the Passion of Christ: a piece of the true cross, the crown of thorns, a nail of the Passion and other relics. They were bought in 1239 from the Emperor of Constantinople and preserved today in the Notre-Dame Cathedral.
The Holy Chapel concentrates one of the most beautiful and complete collections of stained glass windows from the 13th century. It is the most complete and most remarkable set of stained glass art of this era. On sunny days you have a breathtaking view of the stained glass windows.
